Since 1993, federal law requires that all residential garage door openers sold in the United States must include photoelectric eyes or a sensing edge as an additional protection against entrapment. The law also requires that, should the sensors become inoperative, the opener will not function. Garage door openers without these safety devices are dangerous and should be replaced.
